Trent Batson
Director of IT

Trent Batson is director of Information and Instructional Technology Services at the University of Rhode Island. He has been in IT support for 20 years. As an ex-professor of English, he has special concerns about communication on the Web, and the technology to keep Web communication current. He speaks often at conferences about technology and higher education. He was co-chair of the Sakai program committee in December 2005, and is on the program committee for the Seminars on Academic Computing in Aspen in August. His talk at this conference is fully in his short-term memory as his unit is deploying the content management system as this conference convenes.
Timothy Chiacchira

Dartmouth College

Timothy Chiacchira is a veteran Enterprise Management Administrator, currently with Dartmouth College, with technical and administrative responsibility for standardization of Dartmouth’s workstation and server platform, managing remote OS distribution technology, remote patch management, security threat resolution and program distribution in a multi OS environment.

Chiacchira has over 10 years of experience in centralized remote administration of the IT infrastructure and support, emphasizing centralized security threat management and standardization policies for complex and diverse user community. Prior to joining Dartmouth in June of 2003, Chiacchira was the LANDesk Administrator Mercedes Benz USA, a unit of Daimler-Chrysler. At Mercedes, he reported to the President of IT technology and directed the day-to-day Technical support and maintenance of the LANDesk infrastructure for over 14,000 computers and servers.

Prior to Mercedes Benz, Chiacchira spent more than four years at Raymond James Financial where he had overall responsibility for the LANDesk Infrastructure consisting of 10,000 computers across the nation and one office in China.

Chiacchira has a Bachelor of Science from Southeastern University Majoring in Philosophy. He was born in raised in Central Ohio and currently works from his home office in Brandon, FL. He has three cats – Lucretia, Morpheus and Amelia.

Since then, Rob has worn many hats in the Internet space—including those of writer, editor, programmer, architect, designer, marketer, sales rep, product manager, and technology evangelist. Along the way he has been a founding member of three Internet companies, including TechTarget, Inc., a highly successful B-to-B media company in Needham, Mass. Rob started at Colby in 2004—his first professional foray into higher education—where his primary objectives have been to promote the importance of the Web as a communications tool and to provide individuals and departments with the tools and knowledge they need to take advantage of what the Web has to offer.

As Vice President of Marketing, Jeff Ernst directs FatWire's marketing team and initiatives, with responsibility for product marketing, demand generation, partner marketing, press and analyst relations, and marketing communications. Jeff joined FatWire following FatWire's acquisition of divine's Content Server. At divine, he was VP of Marketing for the Content Management and Collaboration business unit, leading product marketing, press and analyst relations, and strategic alliance initiatives. He opened new revenue streams for divine by defining and launching joint solutions that integrated divine's Content Management platform with the application, commerce, and portal servers from IBM, BEA, Sun, and Oracle. As Director of Industry Solutions at Open Market, Jeff was instrumental in leading the company's penetration of the content management solution into new industry segments, including manufacturing, distribution, and retail. Jeff spent ten years in senior product management and marketing roles with Infinium Software, launching new products and releases in the areas of business intelligence, financial management, and human capital management. Jeff received his MBA from the Olin School of Business at Babson College, and a Bachelor of Science degree from Babson College.

As vice president of technology for RedDot Solutions, Guarnaccia helps to serve as a technology leader working with analysts to identify trends in the enterprise content management space.

Prior to joining RedDot, Guarnaccia held the position of Chief Technology Officer for White Horse. In this capacity he delivered e-business strategy and planning services for customer-facing solutions to key Fortune 100 clients such as General Motors, AT&T Wireless, Liberty Mutual and Cisco Systems. He also created engineering development methodology leading to a 95 percent on-time, on-budget delivery performance in addition to managing the internal information technology support team leading to 99 percent uptime of IT services.

Previously, as Director of E-Commerce Operations for Emerald Solutions, Guarnaccia managed multi discipline teams for the western region and was responsible for the overall practice management for ATG, Blue Martini, Iplanet and Interwoven technologies. Guarnaccia held technical management positions for Solutions Architect, Copper Mountain Trust /Crabbe Huson Mutual Funds, and U S West Communications prior to beginning his career at Timeplex, Inc.

Stewart Mader is Senior Instructional Technologist for Life Sciences and the Brown Medical School at Brown University. He has taught science both in the classroom and online, specializes in using social software and wiki technology in education, and works with faculty to apply technology and assess its impact on student learning. He previously served as Educational Technologist at Emerson College, Instructional Designer and Interim Director of the Faculty Center for Learning Development at University of Hartford, and has collaborated with faculty at Long Island University on a series of teaching and learning projects.

He is co-founder of The Science of Spectroscopy, a project which rethinks how spectroscopy is taught by using a model that starts with real-world applications, gets students engaged and asking ‘how does it work?’ and then teaches techniques and theory. The web site is wiki-based, making it easy for users to quickly edit pages and contribute information using just a web browser. The project has been featured in the journals Science and Chemistry International, is a member of the National Science Digital Library and the National Grid for Learning, and was recently named a member of 33 Wikis, a showcase of the best in wiki-based collaboration. He also publishes a blog, Using Wiki in Education which focuses on using the wiki for collaborative curriculum development and group learning, and includes includes interviews, example wiki uses, and product reviews.

He has produced two films in collaboration with NASA. Seeing the Scientific Light and Skysight let students hear directly from scientists who use spectroscopy in their everyday work. The films have aired on PBS stations and are currently in retail distribution. He holds a B.S. in Chemistry from University of Hartford, and is pursuing an M.S. in Curriculum Development and Instructional Technology from the University at Albany.

Prior to working at the University of Maryland, among other things, John worked at the Computer-based Education Research Laboratory at the University of Illinois. There he was involved in the development of many technologies that are commonplace today such as plasma displays, digital multiplexers, analog-to-digital devices, online forums, and multi-user real-time interaction through computers.

At UMUC he was the instigator, designer, and original Director of the WebTycho project, UMUC’s online campus system. As Associate Director, he continues to be one of the lead designers, researcher, and developer for the WebTycho system.
